Intramuscular Stimulation / Dry needling is a therapy that uses extremely fine needles which are inserted into the target muscle to help relieve pain and improve function. Often the patient reports a twitch, a deep achey feeling or a pressure when undergoing IMS / Dry Needling. The therapist then removes the needle and moves onto the next.

The needles are solid and do not deliver any solution – this is why it is known as a “dry needling” technique. IMS / Dry Needling can provide relief from pain, improve range of motion, and help to ease muscle tension. Some common injuries successfully treated with IMS / Dry Needling include:
• Neck Pain
• Shoulder Problems
• Lower Back Pain
• Knee Conditions
• Tendonitis
• Sciatica
• Hip Pain

Born and raised on Vancouver Island, sports and the outdoors have always been my passion. I have grown up skiing and hiking the local mountains, and have practiced Physio in Whistler, catering specifically to skiing and snowboarding injuries. Yoga, cycling and running are my regular hobbies. Having completed marathons, triathlons and many cycling events, I am experienced in treating the common injuries associated with these sports.

My interest lies in manual therapy. I have successfully completed an advanced diploma in this area, which consisted of 5 additional years of specific coursework and continuous study, followed by a rigorous exam process. As such, I am a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Manipulative Physiotherapy (FCAMPT). I was also a certified trainer for the Canadian Navy.

Additionally, I am passionate about teaching and have taught at the University of Amsterdam, Netherlands, where I lived for 3 years. I was also a physiotherapist in the Netherlands, and was exposed to many different clinical techniques. Continuing education at the University level keeps me relevant and current. I now assist in the Master of Physiotherapy Program at the University of British Columbia, teaching graduate students clinical skills, throughout the year.

My goal is to optimize individual well-being, by helping people understand the cause of their pain, and educating them on how to correct it. I work with all sectors of the population, catering to the general public and athletes. I focus on postural correction techniques that are common to work related neck and back pain, motor vehicle accidents, as well as those related to athletic training. My treatments are based on a range of manual therapy techniques, including mobilizations and manipulations, soft tissue release and Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS / dry needling), to restore joint and muscle function. This is combined with exercise therapy to prevent recurrence of injury.

Winnie completed her Master of Science in Physical Therapy from the University of Toronto in 2019. Her interest in health care stemmed from her wish to help others recover from life’s hurts and challenges. After graduating from the University of British Columbia with her Bachelor of Science in Psychology in 2016, she delved into work and volunteer that helped promote the mental health and wellness of adults with autism and socially isolated seniors. However, she recognized her lack of knowledge and competency in helping people with their physical pain in the process, and developed a keen interest in physical therapy as a result.

Winnie started her career at Vancouver Coastal Health, working mostly in acute post-operative rehabilitation with patients who underwent total joint replacements. She now expands her practice to a private orthopaedic setting, where she utilizes manual therapy, individualized exercise prescription, and modalities to help clients achieve their goals. Winnie has completed her Level 1 Diploma of Advanced Orthopaedic Manual and Manipulative Physiotherapy, and aims to pursue continued education in this area. Winnie is also certified in Vestibular Rehabilitation for BPPV, Vertigo, Dizziness and Functional Dry Needling.

Outside of work, Winnie chases after intense post-workout sweat, delicious cuisine, and wild fictional tales in movies and dramas.

Winnie is fluent in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin.
